Frogmore
Monday, August 25, 2008
Yesterday we spent the day in Windsor as we had booked to take a look at Frogmore House. It is a home on the Windsor Estate which is still used by the Royal Family and was where Queen Victoria grew up.
Frogmore is only open to the public two days a year so it's best to book ahead for fear of forgetting!
Anyway we spent a drizzly morning on the Frogmore estate but to be honest the grounds are so nice we didn't notice the rain.
Frogmore is a couple of miles from Windsor Castle so we had a bit of exercise and worked up an appetite, grabbing some lunch before heading into the castle. We have been to the castle several times but never so late in the day and to be honest I couldn't stand the crowds. It didn't feel too bad to rush around as quickly as we did as we had seen much of it before.
The Moat Garden was open to the public yesterday, again a feature usually out of bounds to the public. We took the opportunity to have a stroll around the beautifully secluded gardens and I am really glad we did as it offered a fantastic perspective of the castle that you rarely get to see.
Thankfully it's a bank holiday here in the UK and we have the chance to chill out (Friday we tided up the garden), today as it's over cast we have planned a Beef Roast followed by a lazy afternoon together. Perfect.
Follow the link to see a selection of the photos we captured yesterday.Labels: Flickr, UK

Congratulations
I have to give a final congratulations to the Great British Olympic Team who are on their way home with a staggering 19 Gold, 13 Silver and 15 Bronze medals. It's been a thrill to spectate in the Beijing Olympics.
So the double decker bus has transformed and now the stage is set for the games to come here in 2012 - no doubt this will dominate the news and press coverage for the next 4 years. I just hope that the 2012 team pull it off and they manage to host an Olympics that all of us in the UK can be proud of.Labels: London

Me Mail
Sunday, August 24, 2008
I got a mail from myself today! Or rather someone in the US who has the same name as me.
It took me a while to work out we shared the same name (it is early on a Sunday morning as I write) - but that's kind of cool and the mail was very nice and complimentary.
Have you ever made contact with yourself?Labels: My World

Olympic Efforts
Sunday, August 17, 2008
Further Congratulations to Team GB as the medal rush continues from Super Saturday into Super Sunday ;0)
I also want to congratulate the BBC on their fantastic Olympic coverage. They have embraced every feasible technology on a professional and personal level. Are any other big news channels using the Web 2 technologies, Twitter, Blogs and Flickr (for example) in such a manner?
Take a look at the BBC Sports Olympic Group on Flickr - it has a fantastic array of shots.Labels: News, UK

Congratulations Team GB
Saturday, August 16, 2008
I cannot let today pass without some comments on Super Saturday (or even the run up to it).
Team GB are doing a fantastic job and today especially the golds are piling in.
Congratulations to the cycle teams, Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy and of course Rebecca Adlington. What stunning performances.
A surprise win for us was the men's coxless four who took the gold earlier today - to me they don't look quite so coxless ;0)
Of course, the best of luck to all those still competing.
If this is the standard for Beijing, I am really looking forward to the games coming here in 2012.Labels: UK

Cruel
I am sorry but WTF is CNN thinking videoing this? It's not news and it's certainly not entertainment.
Why own so many cats and why keep them couped up in one room.
As Brandy and Jerry came from a similar situation I find this behaviour deplorable. Those poor cats should be homed with people who love them, in environments that enable them to rest and relax.
This just looks like hell. That woman should be prosecuted.Labels: Cats, You Tube

Who cares?
So Madonna is 50 today - who really cares?
All I care is that she may finally realise she's too old and talentless to be doing what she does. Making the world suffer with her egotistical warbling and schenanigans for 50 years is quite enough.
Give up Grandma and give us all a break!Labels: Music

Moving on...
Thursday, August 14, 2008
After 60 years (mum), and 37 years (dad), my parents are leaving the area of Plymouth where they (and I) grew up.This has all happened quickly but the move is for the best. To me it will be odd to go home to see them and it not be in our family home. I know this is not unusual but my parents move has happened over a very short period. Therefore I wasn't expecting my last visit home 4 weeks ago to be the last time I went to that address. Any how this is where they are moving and it's much better, nicer area and I cannot wait to see them in a couple of weeks once they have settled in. Labels: Plymouth

Olympic Sized Fake(s)
Monday, August 11, 2008
I knew there was something fishy about the Olympic opening ceremony - it was all too well orchestrated and precise (I am not dissing it all as I thought it was wonderful, just this bit)...
The giant firework footsteps that lead you through Beijing to the Birds Nest Stadium were not fireworks but timed CGI graphics.
I find this really sad when it comes from the country that invented fireworks but I understand the IOCs reasoning that having a helicopter fly so close over live fireworks was dangerous.
I wonder which poor soul drew the short straw and had to tell the Chinese authorities to change it!
I have to ask why they thought to keep it in - weren't the rest of the proceedings spectacular enough?
Commiseration's to Tom Daly who didn't do as well as hoped in the synchronized diving event. I promise to keep everything crossed for your individual dive!
One last thing (American readers look away now) please can we stop all this hype surrounding Michael Phelps. The guy is so egotistical - I don't care if he gets 8 gold medals. Considering his arrogant manner I don't think he deserves them.
Update it has now come to light that one of the performers in the opening ceremony mimed. Why on earth did they put in a substitute girl for the cameras? Was the actual singer not pretty enough?

Hadrian Takes a Lover
Sunday, August 10, 2008
We spent the day in London as we had managed to acquire complimentary tickets to the Hadrian Exhibition at the British Museum.
The Exhibition was very interesting and I am glad to see that the British Museum has kept the temporary gallery space in the reading room.
Following a couple hours in the company of the Roman Emperor and his gay lover we decided to head into Soho where we grab a bite to eat at one of our favourite diners before having a mooch around Carnaby Street for a bit of shopping (I got myself a bargain in the Howies shop) ;0)
I find it very interesting that Hadrian was so powerful and had such influence and yet hardly anything is known about his wife (more is known about his lover).Labels: Art, London

Local Boy Does Good
Saturday, August 09, 2008
It's not often someone from my home city makes it onto the world stage* but young (14 year old) Tom Daly is a big hope for this years Team GB Diving success.
It's good to see he enjoys his sport and is completely grounded. Best of luck Tom and of course Team GB!
(*I didn't mention Sharon Davis who was an Olympic Silver medalist (1980) from my school as I cannot stand the woman!)Labels: Plymouth, You Tube

Dark Week
Friday, August 08, 2008
It's been a dark week!
Anyone following me on Twitter will know that some moron managed to run into our parked car on Wednesday evening. He said "his wheel popped out" but I find this highly unlikely as he managed to snap his drive shaft.
Looking at the tyre tracks on the pavement opposite our car it's obvious he came down the road at speed, hit the curb and bounced off ramming into our car. Luckily there is no body damage but he obliterated the hub cap and managed to buckle the wheel.
I dread to think what possible damage there may be to the tracking, the suspension and the handling - at the very least we need a new wheel and tyre! I am home today waiting for the garage to come and tow the car away to investigate :(
The week started off with another shock as we found out via the lovely UK tabloid press how our boss committed suicide. We knew that he had done so but didn't know the details (and to be honest didn't want to know).
Four months after the vent we were all moving on from this tragic episode, the last thing any of us wanted was to have the grim details splashed in headlines of 5 of the daily rags.
Why is it necessary to report such facts? Why is it necessary to report how much his house was worth or what family he leaves behind or who found him?
I understand he was a Director of my company (a huge global company), therefore "Coroner Confirms ******* Company Director Commits Suicide, leaves Wife and young family)" should have been sufficient. Why does anyone other than the family need to know all the grim details.
It was really upsetting to have to go through all this again and sadly I had read the article which meant I had to live with the image for a while - an image I couldn't comprehend or shift from my mind.
I dread to think how his family must feel.Labels: My World, Work

Where to start?
Sunday, August 03, 2008
Following recovery of my crashed Lacie hard drive I now have the task of reordering the 28,869 photos.
I have already done 1000 but need to find a better way to do it.
Sadly none of the original dates or tags were preserved :(Labels: Photography

Why So Serious?
Last night we went to see The Dark Knight and my expectations were high. Thankfully we were not disappointed.
Although a long film at 2 hours and 30 minutes, it seemed to pass by in a flash. The story moved on at quite a pace and there were elements that kept you on the edge of your seat.
Yes Heath Ledgers portrayal as the Joker was menacing, chilling and dark but to be honest I think he was matched by the rest of the cast. That said he out shone Jack Nicholson in the role.
Gary Oldman was a surprise as Commissioner Gordon, not an obvious choice for the role but a good one.
The films rating here in t he UK was a 12A which means teenagers are to be accompanied by an adult as the film contains scary elements - well I will admit to covering my eye during parts of the movie as the fear level was cranked up. The film could have been much darker but I think they got away with enough to reach it's broad classification.
I think this film has triumphed over the likes of Spiderman 3 as it doesn't solely rely on special effects or lots of explosions (although the blowing up of Gotham General was rather spectacular). There is enough drama and suspense in the plot to keep you gripped, leveled off with a decent amount of fight scenes and effects where necessary.
I am very interested to see how the Batman story has evolved and how it matches with DC stories - it'll b e interesting to see where they go from here.
Long may this run of the Batman franchise continue.

iMore Information
Saturday, August 02, 2008
Well it's been a couple of weeks since taking ownership of my iPhone 3G and I wanted to write to update you all on a couple of things.
Invisible Shield
You may recall in my last review that I didn't rate the Griffin Wave case and had ordered the Invisible Shield kit.
Well it's been installed on my iPhone for a week and a half and I honestly didn't know how I managed without it.
The application of the shield is a bit fiddly and to be honest the corners are not perfect but this is a minor gripe when considering the benefits.
The grip is greatly improved now which means I have more confidence when using my iPhone. At first it felt a little tacky but this isn't a bad thing. The shield does not attract dust etc (but the bobbly corners original caught the odd hair!). This means I can slip my iPhone 3G in my pocket without any concerns.
The screen is viewable and only in direct sunlight can you see the slight ripple effect of the coating - this isn't noticed when viewing straight on.
The shield doesn't impact on the performance either as the touch screen works perfectly. It also seems that my iPhone is no longer victim to so many finger prints and smudges.
De Blob
OK first up I must confess to downloading and instantly deleting a number of Apps as they have not lived up to my expectations.
Some such as Super Monkey Ball have simply been removed from my iPhone as they are too difficult to control (which is a shame as it looked so promising).
I have recently purchased De Blob and unknown to me this is a port from a Wii game.
If you can ignore all the silly bickering in the ratings section re the price you have an excellent, fun and quite addictive game.
It's especially clever (when considered with Sega's SMB) as it allows you to play with the touch screen or the tilt mechanism. You can also calibrate the tilt mechanism for your playing angle (Are you listening Sega?).
The game concept is pretty simple but there are quite a few challenges in there (not least remembering which colours when mixed together make what new colour).
This game wins over the likes of Super Marion on the DS as they would drive me nuts as I could not save my levels on my commute. The levels in De Blob are timed allowing me the choice of when to play (when considering my journey) and at the end of every stage everything is saved for me.
The graphics are really bright and colourful and the music is quite funky.
If you want a puzzle/arcade game that you can pick up every once in a while (or get totally addicted to) and you have a spare £4 then you can't really do wrong with De Blob.Labels: iPhone 3G, Wii

No Release
Friday, August 01, 2008
For those of you who haven't realised my pod casts are no more...
As if to finalise this I received the confirmation from the company that hosted them. today they have informed me that my account is completely disabled.
It feels like the end of an era for me and to be honest it does feel like I have lost a little part of me.
I have enjoyed my three years as a Pod Caster and thank you all for your support in my adventures.Labels: Release, Trunk Cast
