The Release of Leopard

Saturday, October 27, 2007

OSX LeopardDespite the realise of Leopard and all the broo-ha-ha in the technology community I am feeling a little left out. I love my iBook and it has given me much joy and use since I have had it - much more than any other PC I have ever had and yet it is unable to move boldly into the new level of OSX. All the technical aspects are there, including RAM, chip set etc but sadly my hard drive is full to bursting.

I run my iBook with around 6GB free which is adequate for my everyday use but sadly this is not enough (according to Apple's tech specs) to upgrade to Leopard. I have read that the upgrade needs 9Gb and in some places 3Gb - I wish I could confirm which it was as I would gladly upgrade if it didn't take up too much space.

Still I guess it is best to wait as I have been thinking about purchasing an iMac for some time - it would make sense too as it would enable me to a) ditch Windows for good b) upgrade to Leopard and to iLife 08 at the same time (at no extra cost) and c) have a fantastic desktop machine too. Of course I won't be getting rid of my trusty old iBook.

Oh well I guess all I can do for now is read the reviews and dream...

The fifth major update to Mac OS X, Leopard, contains such a mountain of features - more than 300 by Apple's count - that it's difficult to boil this $129 operating system release down to a few easy bullet points. Leopard is, at once, a major alteration to the Mac interface, a sweeping update to numerous included productivity programs, and more...

What the Walrus!?

OK I can see the humour in LOL Cats/Cheezburger pictures but every once in a while one has to ask how these animals got in such a situation in the first place.

This photo is funny but what was the car manufacturer thinking?

Cracked Up

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

"The Crack" - Tate Modern, LondonSteph and I took a walk across to the Tate Modern at lunch time as there is a new installation in the Turbine Hall.

This installation is very interesting as a hairline crack starts at the entrance and opens up along the floor in several parts to reveal deep jagged ridges filled with wire and debris.

This depicts cultural and racial divides and as usual for these installation they are generating a lot of interest.

I find it annoying and slightly sad that the Tate Modern needs to include stewards as people were allowing their children to stick their feet in the cracks. Considering the depth and the sharpness of the crack I certainly want to do that, let alone let my kids do it!

It was nice to get out and have a proper walk at lunch too. I haven't had a proper lunch break in ages, it was busy being half term but it was nice to get out and about. Steph is great company too. It's a shame it was so damn cold though!

More photos are available in my Lunchtime Walk set at Flickr.

Back at work

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

It's been difficult getting back into work after being out so long but already I wish it was Friday.

I had some bad news from home yesterday which didn't start my week in the most positive manor.

Thankfully it's pretty sorted although not totally.

How many days until the weekend?

Another week lost

Saturday, October 20, 2007

As you will recall from the mail I posted last weekend, I had been very ill following an adverse reaction to a jab I received a week or so before. Well I went back to work on Monday and unfortunately I came home again within about two hours.

You know you lay at home feeling like crap then you get to a point and you think you are better or you fool yourself into thinking you are fine and then when you try to ramp up to doing everyday things, it hits you; you're not.

Well this happened to me - by the time I had even walked to the railway station I was shaking, when I got in the office I was shivering and shaking and sweating like crazy. I was cold, wrapped up like it was mid winter and yet i was really clammy and wet. I admitted defeat and came home.

I spent the remainder of the day in bed before going to see my doctor who confirmed that my glands were still up (and ulcerated), I still had a temperature and I should continue to rest. Another course of antibiotics and lots of sleep were what was prescribed and that's what I have taken this week.

I didn't notice any difference at the beginning of the week but gradually things have got better.

I am not sure if it has been the tablets or the illness but I have been very lethargic this week. I have spent most of my time asleep, sleeping in until really late (which I don't do) and then napping through the day.

I don't feel like I have been very productive but then again that's the point of being signed off - I have taken plenty of rest, headed my doc's advice and feel much better for it.

It's just as well I am feeling better as this weekend is the first anniversary of Richard and my Civil Partnership. Yes it really has been a year since the Big Event. I really cannot believe where that year has gone. Still I have been thinking about it mid comatose this week and there are lots of wonderful memories from the day to look back on, as well as a wonderful first year as hubby and hubby.

Well that's it for me for now - sitting in front of the computer any longer will just make me dizzy!

Is it really me?

Beardy and BroodyWell after a week and a half of feeling absolutely terrible I seem to finally be back on the mend.

Tuesday week saw Richard and I have our flu jabs. Something we have both had before. That night I became very ill, I couldn't breath, I couldn't inhale any asthma medication, I was very hot, feverish, had pulsating headaches, I was streaming from my ears, nose and eyes and most worryingly I was coughing up blood.

A trip to the doctors determined that I had had a major reaction to the injection and since then I have been fighting with it to get better.

Thursday just as I was starting to feel brighter I was hit by something else; I popped into the spare bedroom for something only to be stung by a wasp! I have never been stung buy a wasp before (and never want to again). It got me on my finger which swelled up and a blister appeared at the base. Thankfully for me there is a pharmacist nearby where I managed to get some antihistamine and some cream. Three days later and the top of my finger is still numb with a stabbing pain if I put any pressure on it.

I just cannot believe my luck of late!

Listen to TrunkCast 107 to find out more. Hey I am awake and have my voice back so I might as well get used to using it again!
