Dance on...

Tuesday, November 29, 2005

Today was a departure from the norm as I attended the Content Management Europe exhibition at Olympia, it sounds kind of boring but it was valuable research to enable me to help move my work web site forward.

Of course it is also valuable research for me personally as I think it is always good to have an idea of what is happening in the wider marketplace.

It was a bit chilly getting around though, I was rather glad I decided to wrap up. I am curious though about what you are supposed to do with coffee cups when you have finished the contents? I was quite chilly this morning so I bought a Latte to keep my warm whilst on the platform (and to help wake me up), but this is the second time I have been unable to find a bin on the train or any station...

I know we should be security conscious etc but what about litter conscious? There is even a poster at St Albans station advertising a phone line if you are concerned about litter - if there are no bins then of course there is going to be litter!

I have been checking the calendar and only just realized how close Christmas is. I suppose I need to knuckle down, play social secretary and get everyone organised so that we arrange time to meet before we all depart for the festivities.

One bonus is that Richard and I managed to agree to come home earlier than we had originally planned (thanks Dan ;) ) Why? Simple really... We spend Christmas running around after family, we barely get any rest and we end up avoiding the odd naturally occurring Christmas feud. It's especially noticeable this year as we are back in the south west the week after Christmas!

Therefore we decided we needed a break (let alone anyone else) so we are coming home earlier.

It'll also give us the chance to celebrate New Years how we want to (and thanks to a kind invitation from Ste. and Robin, that has all been sorted ;) )

Warm and fuzzy!

Sunday, November 27, 2005

Today we decided to beat the winter chill and take a drive to Waddesdon Manor for a walk around the grounds.

We invited Dan along for the day as we knew he was interested in Trust properties etc and thought it would be nice to show him this lovely estate.

We were all in for a pleasant trip though unbeknown to us the house had been decorated for Christmas. The grounds were festooned in numerous trees with lots of lights illuminating the area but the biggest surprise was on the interior.

Richard and I fully expected the house to be closed but this too was given a Christmas make over.

We got to see parts of the house that are not usually open and this in itself was a real treat. The fact that the house had huge pines tastefully decorated in every corner was a bonus.

As you can see from this photograph of myself and Dan, even the halls were given the Grotto treatment!

Of course all this high camp Christmas get up has just set me into a real festive mood now. I suppose I should really step away from the computer, seize the moment and make a start on my cards!

It's shots like these that really make me miss home.

The stark reality is that I know close up Plymouth isn't (currently) this beautiful.

For all you Americans celebrating Thanks Giving - this is where is all began.

I feel the need for a ramble about this - keep an eye out for Podcast 18 for more on the subject!

Rhubarb!

Wednesday, November 23, 2005

Roll on Christmas!

French and Saunders in Albert Square

Rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb!

To all my American visitors - Happy Thanksgiving! I should mention it really, after all the Pilgrim fathers did leave my home town to find the new world... Many a time I have browsed upon the Mayflower Steps imagining what they must have felt when they boarded the Mayflower. Have a good day!

Oh that comment I made about the hype over the Xbox 360 etc? Well maybe this might get my attention! LOL

You thought that was bad? Then check out this - oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!

Oh and this site lets you find out which cities have the most Chav friendly areas so you can avoid having to ever go there. How does it do this? Well it illustrates those hideous houses that litter their property with tacky Festive Ornaments! Funnily enough there appears to be a lot in Essex!

Yes that's right, it's been a slow week. A very slow week!

Daily Stewart!

Friday, November 18, 2005

As you know we are spending some time next year in New York. One of things we plan to do is to try and get tickets to see John Stewart and The Daily Show. As far as I can tell this isn't currently possible as all tickets are allocated until January.

Imagine my surprise when I received a mail shot here in the UK advertising that John will be in the UK next month! The purchase of tickets didn't take much consideration and within a day they are sat on the mantle!

I am not sure quite what to expect from the event at the Prince Edward Theatre in Soho but I am sure it'll be funny and topical.

The Mighty BooshI was also planning and hoping to get to see The Mighty Boosh here in St Albans as a list of dates were promoted a couple weeks ago. I have not been to the Arena here and thought this would be a great opportunity to do so.

I now discover that my hopes of see La Boosh here have been scuppered as the venues have been re allocated and they are no longer coming to St Albans :( There is a show in Cambridge which I am sure is a good second choice though I am disappointed that it won't be here (as it's literally down the road!). Never mind.

Last night saw the premiere of the third series of Little Britain (this time it's so big it makes it to BBC One first). Anyway, I was a little disappointed. It would good to see some of the old characters and some new ones were quite amusing but there are faults. I think Walliams and Lucas have fallen into that usual trap of having a surprise hit and are now trying too hard. I guess a fairer judgement will come after I see another episode but I will admit I am not going to loose any sleep if I miss it. Though it's difficult to miss Little Britain at the moment as there is so much merchandise it's scary (why on earth would you want a Daffyd or Vicki Pollard doll?

It is good to read a positive news story in the British press which covers gay life, being HIV + and the police force. I am sure this story must break some sort of tabloid code of conduct! But then again this is issued by the BBC so it's hardly fair to call this a tabloid! Interesting news story though.

OK so it's Friday, it's too early to be up on my day off so I am going to have a soak and some breakfast before getting ready to go in town (London to you).

Inappropriate to comment

Thursday, November 17, 2005

Well that's the end of my week and I can now enjoy a long weekend as I am not back in the office until Tuesday.

I must say that this week has to be one of the weirdest weeks. I have just not felt at all focussed to be honest. I have got heaps done but things just didn't seem to fall into place. I have spent time thinking about my position but this week just blew me off focus.

I doubt I will actually get much of a rest this weekend to be honest. I am planning to go into London tomorrow to shop. I have practically all my Christmas gifts and would like to find myself some nice togs so I look half decent at Christmas parties (I am open to invites!). I have decided to continue the search in the West End as there is better choice and value - I cannot find anything locally that I like or would actually part so much cash for!

Saturday and Sunday will be spent in Devon as we are taking our pre Christmas trip home. I am sure it will be as chaotic as ever and that's probably why I have convinced myself to do as little visiting as possible. I think I really should spend as much time as possible with my parents, including one trip to see my god daughter and family.

Monday? Well I think I will just see what Monday offers. If it's as cold then as it was this morning (-4 according to the thermometer in the garden), I think I will be staying in bed with Brandy snuggled up next to me. It's just a shame Richard will have to go back to work.

I am not sure if this story has made it outside the confines of Europe, I would certainly be interesting to see if it makes it to the Peoples Republic, though I doubt it.

Basically Matthew Pinsent (multi Olympic English rowing gold medalist) has discovered that the coaches in China are being encouraged to beat, bite and basically torture their young gymnasts in order to make them world beaters at the Bejing Olympics in 2008.

Conversations with team members etc stipulate that the young athletes actually see this as normal behaviour and have been educated to be strictly coached.

This is shocking enough but what really makes me sick is the approach of the Olympic Committee. Their official word was "It would be inappropriate to comment on Matthew Pinsent's remarks which the IOC has only heard third hand and understands are more a personal interpretation," - INAPPROPRIATE TO COMMENT!

So basically they are burying their heads in the sand as they don't want to upset the Chinese and potentially jeopardize the 2008 games!

Speculation or not, surely someone should be investigating such accusations? Have these people not heard of Child Abuse, torture, human rights etc? This just makes me sick.

Talking of sick...

ChaviTV broadcast a documentary to bring Take That together ten years after their split. What did we learn from this experience? Howard is a little strange but a loving father. Jason is as camp as tits. Mark is just plain and boring. Gary is grounded, happy and a family man with a beautiful wife and family.

Robbie Williams? He came across as a twisted, sad, bitter, acid driven, cynical, smarmy, cock sure, anally retentive kretin who is set for self implosion at any moment.

If anyone believes the sincerity of La Williams following this interview then you need your head read!

The sooner Robbie Williams comes out (or is found in a back alley with a cock up his ass), the better.

Thank U!

Wednesday, November 16, 2005

Apple thank you so much for the speedy, efficient response to my iPod Nano problems. A shiny new Nano arrived first thing this morning and is working perfectly ;)

As it's so new and shiny I have decided to wait for it's new case to arrive before taking it on the road. I am just really pleased to be back in the land of the pod!

(Of course this still means I have a 20 Gb which is screwed and an iTalk and iTrip with no companion but what can I do? Red Chair certainly don't seem willing to help).

Hurrah

Tuesday, November 15, 2005

At least I have got somewhere with one company with regards to my iPod problems.

Within the space of two days (tracking things online at Apple.com), I have managed to manifest that my Nano arrived, failed all tests, a replacement was ordered and shipped today ;)

On a more negative note this does mean that the Nano was not fixable, this means that my old 20 Gb won't be :( So unless I get anywhere with Red Chair it's stuffed (and judging by the next lame email I received from them (from Crimson this time!), I think this is going to be a long drawn out process!

What also doesn't help is this kind of conversation with the person you sit next too at the office:

(I had just mentioned that I was receiving a replacement iPod Nano and was rather happy):

A) "Well that's all very well but what about all the stuff you had on it (!), you'll have to buy it again. I bet they don't think about that or reimburse you?"

Me) (Looking bemused) "Err no, the music is downloaded to your computer and transferred to your iPod."

A) "Well I guess you'd better hope that the software on your computer doesn't mess up your new one."

Me) "That's covered as I tested Richards iPod and it worked fine."

A) "Well I am sure it won't all be plain sailing."

TWAT! Sorry but if you are going to spend your life being so miserable, keep it to yourself. Don't bring others down with you!

... and relax!

Time to save Gotham

Sunday, November 13, 2005

Finally we got to see Batman Begins last night and I am annoyed it took us so long!

What an excellent film. Bale is brilliant as Wayne and I am so glad to see that the writers have stuck with the true Batman generation story line. It's also refreshing that you know pretty much who is coming next and what the future holds for Gotham.

I am glad the film makers have decided to move away from the Burton Batman movie. Don't get me wrong I adore Burtons first two Batmans but the storylines were always screwed up.

Any long standing Bat fan knows that the Joker was not killed in a single outing... none of the villains were.

This Batman is believable, charming, thought provoking and contemporary.

Roll on Batman 2!

I have had a couple emails from my friend who moved to the southern hemisphere and it sounds like they are having a whale of a time. I really admire anyone who can make such a life changing decision and stick with it. It sounds like there are lots of positives in doing so. New Zealand sounds like a lovely place and Richard are seriously considering visiting in the near future.

Today, in the UK and across the Commonwealth is Remembrance Sunday, a day where we take time to reflect on all the brave soldiers, sailors and airmen who gave their lives in the many conflicts since World War I. It's a day to look back and remember, but to also look forward and hope that the world can change. I do have serious doubts about our current affairs though, especially in the light of the London bombings in July and the serious state of France at present. What does it take to move us all forward? The abolition of religion? The destruction of all weapons? Retraction of funds? I hope some day soon we find the answer, before it is too late.

"In France a skinny man dies of a big disease with a little name,
By chance his girlfriend came across a needle and soon she did the same.
At home there were 17 year old boys and their idea of fun,
was being in a gang called The Disciples, high on Crack
Tooting a machine Gun... times."

... and relax

I thought the weekend would never come, especially after yesterday. I ended up having 5 meetings scheduled during the day, but this was only thanks to my intervention - if I had let things escalate as they seemed to, it could have been 7 or 8! I am not entirely sure where I was supposed to magic up the time for all that activity!

This left me feeling rather wiped out last night so I decided to ignore my computer and read for a while. I seem to have fallen into the trap of having too many books on the go at once. I do this too often and then end up not finishing any of them as I confuse myself!

I have received confirmation from Apple the my iPod Nano has arrived at the repair centre and am awaiting a response. Hopefully early next week I will have a visit from the UPS man carrying a working iPod. There has been no further response from Red Chair though.

The rugby season is upon us again (although to be fair I don't follow it that much so I don't actually know if it ever went away). What I do know is that the delectable Ben Cohen once again part of the England Squad. Judging by the latest picture on the BBC, Ben is looking hotter than ever.

THere was an item on BBC London News last night about Josh Lewsey appearing next to a giant bronze statue of himself that is to be placed outside Twickenham Rugby Stadium but I am unable to find any pics - if you find any it's worth a look as he is a real cutie.

The world of photography suffered a loss yesterday when it was announced that Lord Litchfield had suffered a stroke. I am sure his tremendous body of work and his playboy lifestyle lured lots of people into the world of photography. I will miss his work.

BTW I have now heard segments of Confessions on a Dancefloor and really don't see what all the hype is about - the majority of the album sounds like the poor lyrical standard of Bedtime Story but that's not the worst. I thought all the hype was over Madonna's innovative and creative flair? So why does this album sound exactly like what the Pet Shop Boys and Bobby O have been churning out for years? Jump is so blatantly a rip of Tennat and Lowes style, Chiconne should be ashamed.

I just hope the next PSB album wipes the floor with Madonna's Confessions!

I hope that it either gets fixed or returned pretty soon...

At least Apple have presented a really quick turn around. It's a shame the same can not be said for Red Chair :( B*stards!

Bloody Red Chair

Tuesday, November 08, 2005

I am still really cheesed off with the level of support I have not received from Red Chair software with regards to the annihilation of my iPods.

I have managed to get all the relevant paperwork to Apple and a courier box is on it's way so I can send my Nano back but sadly my 20 Gb 3G is no more :( (This is no actual guarantee that my Nano will be replaced).

Red Chair (Anapod) only actually gave me a notification of my complaint when I logged into their site - and all they had to offer me was a new activation code for my new music player when I get one!

What fucking point is there in doing that?

If their software fucked up my iPod in the first place, are they mad enough to think I'd be happy to let it destroy my new iPod? If I manage to get any replacement it's going nowhere near Anapod! Do they think I am mad?

I am now fighting with Anapod for compensation as I am totally pissed off that I have lost both devices.

To be fair my Nano gets most use when I am out and about at the weekend so I have not really missed it yet. I do however really miss my 20 Gb as it usually sits in the glove box, iTrip attached, keeping me seine on the way in and out of work (and no Luke that is not why I have been in a foul mood at the office). Now I have to listen to the radio!

:(

If anyone would like to donate a 20 Gb iPod I would be very very grateful ;)

Some good news (obscure link coming up) is that my podcast has been awarded 5 Stars at Pod Spider ;) Thanks guys!

Dead iPods

Monday, November 07, 2005

I am not happy!

I opened Anapod Explorer on my system yesterday to try out it's functionality as I was investigating it's copy facility for a friend who had her laptop stolen. Little did I know it would completely screwed up both of my iPods, rendering them both useless.

I now have two Apple pieces of kit that don't know what they are and are continuously rebooting :(

Reset fails and I cannot get any computer to recognise them to factory restore as they don't stay on long enough.

To say I am not happy would be an understatement.

I just hope I get some sort of response from Red Chair software with regards to this - and possibly a fix or compensation. I don't hold out much hope though as I am yet to receive any response from them whatsoever.

Do not install Anapod Explorer - it is guaranteed to fuck up your iPod!

Cheese!

Well it's very nearly the weekend and once again it's been a very long and busy week.

At least Richard and I finally managed some time out in our hectic working week for a bit of R n R. We found time to go the cinema this week and finally saw Wallace & Gromit. I have always been a huge fan of this dynamic duo and was a little worried about their transition to the bit screen, I needn't have been worried though as it was just as funny as all their previous outings.

I have been working hard on a separate web project most of the evenings this week, and I hope to have it finished by the weekend. It's an important project for me so the focus has moved away from the blog or the pod cast for the short term. I am sure I will manage to get further snippets online in the interim though.

We have a number of friends coming to lunch on Sunday which will be nice. Especially as we last met up about three months ago! Why is it so difficult to find spare time these days?

I hope to get back to my painting too - I am aware that I still have to get the four canvas online as I promised an upload to the Art section a couple weeks ago - I will do it I promise!

Oh yes! Ross Kemp ends up in the press because he was beaten up by his wife! Get a life you big girls blouse! As if we didn't already think you were a big nelly, this just proves it! Still if you feel you need somewhere to hide while the evil bitch calms down, my door is always open (for a cuppa and a chat of course ;) ).

I am going to sign off for now.

Have a fab weekend.

X Fucks!

Thursday, November 03, 2005

Would someone please admit that there is no need for a game station themed restaurant?

When are you sad bastards going to realise that it's only another plastic box which attached to your TV, wasting electricity, turning you into a fat, boring, egotistic, angry wanker!

Get off your fat arses and get outside! Spend the money on a bike, some walking shoes or a canoe - but above all - get a life!

(And why is it games machines don't seem to attract children anymore - just sad lonely men in their mid 20's to 30's who really have nothing better to do with their time?).

I guess games consoles are a straight fascination and something I will never fully understand.

BBC

Wednesday, November 02, 2005

Thankfully the BBC have managed to come up with three tremendous programmes in their autumn scheduling. Three programmes that prove one network can produce very different programmes and yet still beat boring, plain programmes from overseas.

The three programmes currently having me glued to the box (and honestly the only three) are:

B
- Broken News
This is such a cool comedy sketch show, one that is quite simple to explain but not truly appreciated until you watch. The show takes the guise of you watching numerous news channels as someone flicks from one to the other. The first episode was loosely centred on an outbreak of tomato flu and Bono's constipation. This is very well observed and definitely well written. It definitely makes a mockery of all those boring Murdoch and Gates news channels such as Sky News, MSNBC, ABC and MTV News. Of course the BBC are not afraid to knock themselves either as there was a good dose of knocks headed towards news 24. It was quite refreshing to see actual bona fide news broadcasters on the show too.

B - Bleak House
Possibly one of Dickens best works and greatest observations of relationships. This new adaptation has been shot entirely on hand held cameras and with hidden shots so as to really focus on the feelings of the characters. There are 63 principal characters in Bleak House, all of which are played by a varied and stellar cast. It's running for 15 episodes so this will keep me busy Thursday and Fridays until Christmas!

C - (Strictly) Come Dancing

Possibly an obvious choice but this is still great light entertainment for a Saturday evening. Helped by the choice of Celebs and the fact that we know it's for charity. Of course it's also a great source of Eye candy! Just check out James, Will and Darren! ;0)

I just hope this run of good programmes from the BBC (there are a couple others I have not mentioned), continues. Please don't let us down with Morecombe and Wise on Christmas Day!

Of course the BBC have to be applauded for bringing the delicious Michael Landes to our screens. Love Soup was a fab series and it was made even more enjoyable when watching Gill (Landes) ;)

It is such a shame it was all over so soon :(
