English Pride?
Tuesday, June 22, 2004
I am British, born in England and proud of it. Unfortunately though I increasingly feel less and less proud of my nation and my country thanks to the antics of my fellow country man.
It's such a shame they act like idiots when supporting sporting events. The usual tribe of English "fans" abroad is a shambles and should really be ashamed of their antics.
I grow increasingly tired and embarrassed by images of the "typical English man" abroad - usually grossly overweight, shave head and swigging way too much beer. What on earth has come of this country? What image does this portray of us to other nations?
We are one of the most advanced and culturally mixed countries with the greatest history and world legacy and yet at the mention of a sporting event we feel compelled to act like d*cks!
The latest craze during Euro 2004 (football again seems to bring out the worst in people) is to carry the George's Cross on your car! Apart from the fact they are dangerous they make the driver and occupant look like they have diminished IQ. It's bad enough people choose to adorn their cars in such a way, but why do they need to purchase flags with "England" written on them - are they making sure they have the right flag?
Why do we celebrate St George anyway? He never set foot in England? Today of all days should highlight a much more important patron saint - St Alban. If there is someone who means more to the country and it's people surely it is him?
I'll end with this ludicrous photograph I saw online today - this epitomises my shock, my dismay and my disgust.
Follow this link to tell this woman what you think of her and her dreadful action towards her pet.
I will clarify that I don't think all Englishmen are like this just a minor majority of them - the Labourite Council Estate majority. One of these days we may be able to pull ourselves out of the gutter and hang our head high as a proud nation but I doubt it'll be any time soon. And with football on the forefront of people's minds I doubt it'll happen at all!

End of an era
Sunday, June 20, 2004
Oh well, there you go, the end of an era. After 7 years of hard work and solid duty I have sold my car.
My White 205 was a good little work horse and got me eveywhere I wanted to go.
It was sad to see her driven away but we have a new car now. The 205 has more than fulfilled her purpose.
I hope your new owner lokos after you and that you prove to be as trustworthy and reliable as you were for me.

Ok, so I said I didn't get hooked on anything (like The Mighty Boosh). But I lied ok, get over it!
We were up early this morning and I was flicking around the TV, navigating away from the news when I stumbled across a sublime, sexy song playing on TMF.
I have never heard of the performer before but became absolutely hooked.
"Angel City" by Helicopter Girl is superb, it's sexy, soulful and possibly one of the best things I have heard in ages.
Rarely does a song produce goose-bumps but this really had me shivering.
Sadly I was unable to find the single in my local record store. As ever, unless it's a teen/mass marketed act you cannot find it on the racks of CDs. Increasingly I feel that the charts are fixed because of such purchasing habits of the record stores. This is a shame as Helicopter Girl deserves to be destined for greatness. At least, this should be the hit of the summer.
I urge you if you see this single (or the album which is released on Monday) to buy it!!! Give this wonderful woman and her talent the recognition it deserves. (if you don't see it, like the video and want to purchase it, order it from Play (where I have had to get my copy!)

It's odd but I feel I don't usually get addicted to TV programmes or sucked into new comedies (well apart from Absolutely Fabulous, Gimme Gimme Gimme, French and Saunders... ok point killed!) but I have recently got hooked on The Mighty Boosh.
This is quite an irreverent, off the wall comedy which has recently transferred to BBC Three from BBC Radio and The Edinburgh Fringe.
It's an odd mix and style and while it doesn't give belly laughs it is very amusing.
What is the Mighty Boosh? Well it's a comedy based around two zoo keepers who work in a Zooniverse... Thinking about it I think the official site may explain the whole thing better ;) The Mighty Boosh
For fans of the Boosh I have put a few wallpapers online ;) Enjoy!
Long live Gary Numan!

Weekend away
Thursday, June 03, 2004
For the bank holiday Richard and I visited friends in Manchester. I have known Andy for several years and met his partner last year. It's always nice to catch up with them as they are such good company.
We managed to cram quite a lot into two and a bit days including the Manchester Museum, shopping (of course) and a wonderful picnic at Dunham Massey.
On the Saturday night we went out for a splendid meal at Est Est Est and whilst at the house (and picnic), Rob prepared some truly splendid food.
One thing that wasn't planned was the purchase of a new car! I was a little shocked by how quickly things happened but thanks to Virgin Cars, the cost of living in Manchester and a bit of luck we found a really nice new car for a really great price. Only thing is it is still in Manchester (guess where I will be this weekend!)
Hopefully it won't be too long before we see Andy and Rob again - keep an eye on my review of this years Proms as hopefully they will be attending some of them ;)
